What is dust control? Dust Control is a process where a liquid solution is applied to an
existing, unpaved, gravel road surface to suppress the dust that becomes airborne from passing
vehicles, wind erosion and other aggregate loss.
Road dust is made up of fine particles that are important for the stability of the road. When fines
blow away, the gravel road breaks down and you watch the fines “escape” in the form of dust.
Traffic, rain and wind then scatter the coarser aggregate; causing potholes, ruts, washboards,
loss of profile and ditch lines, and other problems. Wetting the road surface can help to keep
dust-related problems in check as moisture helps fines adhere to each other and to aggregates,
allowing for optimum compaction.
Our product helps keep the fines from escaping, by keeping them hydrated and heavy, thereby
holding the materials together and ON the road.
What kind of products do you use and how do they work? We use a chloride-based
solution. It is water-based, odorless, colorless, non-flammable, non-toxic, and environmentally
friendly product. It works by drawing and holding moisture from the air into the treated road
surface, thereby reducing airborne dust. The moisture retained by the treated surface keeps the
road plastic enough so fines can migrate into gaps formed between aggregates under the
varying pressure of passing traffic. In short, our product does the following:
Reduces the amount of gravel needed in annual maintenance.
Extends the service life of gravel-wearing course, decreasing blading and shaping.
Controls dust
Helps improve road stability when used over time.
How do you apply dust control? Our spray trucks all employ a computerized, speed-
controlled spray bar unit mounted on the rear of a straight truck with a tank mounted on it and
can spray 8 feet to 24 feet wide at the appropriate application rate.
How long does one application last? There are many variables in determining how long one
application will last. They include: preparation of the road, application rate of the product,
weather conditions, the type and quality of aggregate material on the road, traffic volume and
general maintenance of the road.
On a normally travelled, unpaved road with good aggregates and good preparation, one
application should for the duration of the summer. Treating the same area year after year, you
will notice even better dust suppression and stability due to the residual effects from the year(s)
before.
How much dust will be controlled with one application? There are many variables here as
well. When the dust solution is applied, the majority of dust will be suppressed. Depending on
traffic flow and weather conditions, you may later notice some dust begin to kick up behind
vehicles, but still significantly less than on an untreated road. “Dust” from a treated road is
heavier than untreated fines and will fall back onto the surface of the road rather than hang in
the air. In our humid summers, the rain and air moisture is often enough to replenish the
product’s full effects. Even spraying your road down with the garden hose will replace moisture
in the road surface and will “reconstitute” the initial treatment for continued dust suppression.
The distance treated can make a difference as well, as untreated fines from adjacent surfaces
can be dragged onto the top of the treated surface.
Do I need permission to have dust control applied on my public road? YES!! Call the
City, County, Township or Road District that maintains your road, and tell them you plan
to have dust control applied on your road and make sure you have permission to do so.
Make sure that the products and vendor are approved by the county for use on your
public road.
Also, request that they prep your road prior to treatment and make sure you understand
what their procedures are for maintaining the road before and after treatment. It is ideal
if the road crews do not grade after the treatment, but please make sure you ask what
their policies and procedures are:
You do not need to obtain County permission or product approval for dust control
on private property or roads.
What do I need to do to prepare my road for dust control? First, you are responsible for
measuring the length and width for the part of your road you want treated. Second, you are
responsible for marking your start and stop points clearly with flags or other visible markers.
(Marker flags can be found at your local hardware store) Third, you are responsible for getting
the designated area prepared by having it graded. If the county/township/road department will
be grading, you are responsible for requesting this prep work. We will advise the county of who
wants the dust control, but you should also be in contact with them. Ideally, your road should be
graded prior to the dust control being applied. We want to ensure the road is as smooth as
possible when we spray.
What will happen if my road is not graded prior to treatment? Depending on the condition
of your road, it can make a little difference or a big difference. The smoother the road is when
treatment is applied, the more evenly and deeply the product will absorb into the aggregate and
the longer it will last. Not grading to smooth out the road can limit the effectiveness of the
product and shorten the life span of the dust control treatment, especially if there are divots or
potholes.
How many feet of road should I treat? We do require a minimum continuous spray of 300
feet, but you may need to treat more depending on how much road frontage you want to control
the dust on. Property owners who live on the same road will sometimes join together to form a
group and treat longer distances altogether. If you are able to form a group of property owners
on your road, please appoint one person to be your group spokesperson to help coordinate the
prep work.

Other details: We will be in contact with you a few days ahead of your treatment to let you
know when to expect us. We do our best to schedule around forecasted “weather”, rain CAN
delay us at the last minute. We don’t want to spray when there is standing or running water on
the surface we are treating but the ground being damp/moist IS a big plus for the product
absorption.
